Balch Park pack station operates out of the State Forest taking pack trips into the Golden Trout Wilderness. The Mountain Home guard station, located just outside the State Forest, is a Forest Service facility operated by concessionaire and available for overnight rental.

Check the Idaho City Ranger District Motor Vehicle Use Map for trails in the area that are open to hikers, equestrians, mountain bikers and off-road vehicles. During the forest’s early settlement, several Central Valley grain farmers built small summer cabins in the area and other Valley residents soon followed. For years, six hundred to seven hundred visitors arrived each summer to spend extended vacations.

He authorized Dude Sutch to start felling live sequoia trees and also brought in two commercial lumber companies to do the same. The logging hiatus ended in 1930 after Donald “Dude” Sutch bought rights to cut fence posts from dead sequoia trees on the old Hume-Bennett acreage. The campground is situated on the banks of the Wishon Fork of the Tule River and provides more of a wilderness-style camping experience. This campground area is very popular with day-users as it provides excellent river access and water play opportunities. Bear Creek Road and Balch Park Road meet to form a loop at the Mountain Home State Forest in the mountain Home Grove of giant sequoias. This popular recreation area is open from mid-May to mid-November until snow closes the road. These areas cooled by the granite rock would have been welcomed by Native cultures retreating from the sweltering heat.

Savoy Mountain State Forest makes it easy to leave the everyday world behind. Scenic North and South Ponds, with wooded edges and hills rising in the distance, offer tranquil places to fish, picnic and swim. Forty-five campsites and 1 group site are located in an old apple orchard. Families will enjoy the short one-mile Forestry Information Loop Trail that features interpretive signs.
