At 16,500 acres, October Mountain is the largest state forest in Massachusetts. Many popular trails and day use areas have hundreds of fire damaged trees that will need to be removed for visitor safety before being re-opened to recreation. Mountain Home will look much different to the recreating public when it is safe to return. The State Forest also manages a large number of camping sites including a group camp. Balch Park pack station operates out of the State Forest taking pack trips into the Golden Trout Wilderness. The Mountain Home guard station, located just outside the State Forest, is a Forest Service facility operated by concessionaire and available for overnight rental.

Check the Idaho City Ranger District Motor Vehicle Use Map for trails in the area that are open to hikers, equestrians, mountain bikers and off-road vehicles. During the forest’s early settlement, several Central Valley grain farmers built small summer cabins in the area and other Valley residents soon followed. For years, six hundred to seven hundred visitors arrived each summer to spend extended vacations.

Undeterred, Jack decided to create a compelling reason for a public agency to buy it. He authorized Dude Sutch to start felling live sequoia trees and also brought in two commercial lumber companies to do the same. The logging hiatus ended in 1930 after Donald “Dude” Sutch bought rights to cut fence posts from dead sequoia trees on the old Hume-Bennett acreage. Dude worked the forest deadfall until 1941, when efforts to sell the property began anew.
Four campsites were recently constructed near the public corrals and are available for equestrian users only. Equestrian campers are required to register and pay for their site at the Shake Camp Campground. Located in the northwestern Berkshires, the former apple orchard turned campground, offers 45 spacious campsites and 4 log cabins. Two beautiful ponds offer tranquil places to fish, picnic, hike and swim. Be sure to explore Bog Pond and Tannery Falls, one of the state's highest waterfalls. Campsites open May through October, depending on snow conditions.
The campground is situated on the banks of the Wishon Fork of the Tule River and provides more of a wilderness-style camping experience. This campground area is very popular with day-users as it provides excellent river access and water play opportunities. Bear Creek Road and Balch Park Road meet to form a loop at the Mountain Home State Forest in the mountain Home Grove of giant sequoias. This popular recreation area is open from mid-May to mid-November until snow closes the road. The area is popular with local residents from the Central Valley for hunting, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, and general day use. Frasier Mill Campground has 49 campsites and one additional site for a camp host .
Large cabins are $60/night for Massachusetts residents and $150/night for non-residents. Pitted cupules and bedrock mortars are frequent and the granite boulders of this mountain have fallen in various ways to allow access to shaded shelters. These areas cooled by the granite rock would have been welcomed by Native cultures retreating from the sweltering heat.
Savoy Mountain State Forest makes it easy to leave the everyday world behind. Scenic North and South Ponds, with wooded edges and hills rising in the distance, offer tranquil places to fish, picnic and swim. Forty-five campsites and 1 group site are located in an old apple orchard. Within the State Forest is Balch Park, a campground with a small museum highlighting the historic logging of this beautiful grove. Balch Park is operated by Tulare County Parks and Recreation.
Inside Mountain Home Demonstration State Forest
No horses are allowed in the campground, but corrals are available nearby. Stroll through groves of Giant Sequoias, including 4 of the largest Sequoias in the world. Explore the Tule River take in the series of waterfalls. In order to prevent the spread of invasive insects, obtain firewood locally. Once you get your hiking boots from your rig, you will be treated with miles of superb hiking trails. Families will enjoy the short one-mile Forestry Information Loop Trail that features interpretive signs. More advanced hikers can try the Balch Park Trail and the Griswold Trail that extends for more than three miles. Another moderate trail for you to try is the two-mile Loop Trail where you can take a short trip to one of the interesting Indian Bathtubs carved out of granite and a view the Adam Tree.
